50. Something for the Weekend: Halo Halo “Manananggal”

Halo Halo "Manananggal" (2011)

Drawing sounds from the breath of ghostly post-punk, young London trio Halo Halo chanced upon my radar recently thanks to a storming set supporting Electrelane at Scala.

Demonstrating a quiet, shy demeanour, Halo Halo slyly draw the listener into their nest with a solemn noise.
What does emanate is both haunting and beautiful and – thankfully – bereft of the inch perfect recording technique that permeate modern times’ suffocated recordings.

It is certainly an element that could well have destroyed what is a fascinating song, but as it is “Manananggal” is quite wonderful.
And that is rather marvellous.

“Manananggal” is out now.

  1. Any idea if Halo Halo is composed of Fil-Brits? (i.e. partly of Filipino blood) Halo Halo is a very popular desert of crushed ice and fruits here in the Philippines.

Has a very indie sound to it. The MTV is almost certainly a mashup of scenes from a Filipino movie about… what else, the manananggal. More on the creature here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manananggal

      • I knew it! 🙂

I’ll be honest with you – I couldn’t really understand the lyrics. 😀 If you could post it here or link to where you can post it, that would be much appreciated.

I’m from Manila, by the way. Mabuhay kayo! 🙂
